MACROMEDIA PREVIEWS NEW SERVER TECHNOLOGIES FOR MACROMEDIA FLASH
Server products extend powerful capabilities of Macromedia Flash MX for rich Internet application development

San Francisco—March 4, 2002—Macromedia, Inc. (Nasdaq: MACR) today delivered a preview of new Macromedia server technologies for creating rich Internet applications with Macromedia Flash MX (announced today, see separate release). The new technologies include Macromedia ColdFusion MX (the next ColdFusion release, previously code-named "Neo") for rapid application development, a new technology for high-performance application server connectivity, and a new technology for collaboration and communication. The server technologies will ship later this year.

"Rich applications are the future of the Internet," said Kevin Lynch, chief software architect, Macromedia. "With Macromedia Flash MX and our new server technologies, developers will be able to bring rich content, communications, and applications together to deliver radically better user experiences."

Macromedia Flash Player is the leading rich client on the Internet, with more than 98 percent of online users able to view Macromedia Flash content today across leading platforms and devices. Taking advantage of Macromedia Flash Player, the Macromedia Flash MX development environment, and new server technologies, application developers will be able to build a new generation of rich applications that promise a more intuitive, responsive user experience.

Industry leaders such as E*TRADE Financial are already using Macromedia Flash MX to build rich Internet applications that deliver a measurable return. E*TRADE Financial speeds up things for customers through Quote Widget, a rich Macromedia Flash application that displays stock quotes without requiring a page refresh.

"By delivering real-time stock quotes through a rich Macromedia Flash application, we are able to provide a dynamic new experience for customers," said Pam Kramer, chief content development officer, E*TRADE Group, Inc. "Macromedia Flash is a powerful development tool. It reduced our QA and debugging time across browsers. We look forward to the additional productivity gains that will result from the entire Macromedia Flash MX solution."

Macromedia ColdFusion MX, which can be used in conjunction with Microsoft .NET, Java application servers, and web services, will provide developers with the fastest and easiest way to create rich applications with Macromedia Flash MX. In addition, developers will be able to use a new server gateway technology to build Macromedia Flash applications that work directly with leading application servers and web services.

For communication and collaboration solutions, developers will be able to use a new Macromedia communication server technology that will enable powerful capabilities including two-way audio and video as well as real-time data transfer with Macromedia Flash Player 6.

"The full potential of the Internet has not yet been realized. The ability to incorporate rich, active content into applications will make the entire web experience more valuable and compelling than anything we have experienced to date," said Rikki Kirzner, research director, IDC. "Companies that already have a large installed base of users and widely-deployed player technology will be in the best position to provide the necessary infrastructure to get information from the server to the client and will help to transform the web experience into a much more meaningful, personalized experience."
